Age of Conan : Intervista a Craig Morrison

Big update for Age of Conan, items gain new life, classes have been revamped, a new zone in Tarantia has been added to the game. Changes in gameplay and a lots of tweaks. We told with Craig Morrison, game director of AoC, about all of that.

GS: The Item revitalization is a very big change for AoC, but many MMOs have this kind of statitistics and equipments impact on the game. Why Funcom decided to make this very anticipated revamp now and not before, or even why AoC didn’t start with this more classical approach to RPG system?

That’s not really for me to say. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and it is easy to say now that this was the better course. I am sure that the original team had very valid reasons for the choices they made prior to launch, it just didn’t work out as expected, and wasn’t popular enough to grab players attentions. Sometimes it is only when the masses get a hold of your game that these things become apparent. I think that is mainly why we have now made the changes we have, the feedback clearly told us that people didn’t think the RPG system provided enough incentives!

GS: Why did you decide to expand Tarantia instead of adding another zone/quarter to Stygia/Khemi, or make some changes/improvements/adds to other areas/regions ?

I think it’s a great location, and it is the capital of King Conan! He is after all, at the centre of the universe Howard created so it made sense to flush out the situation right on his own doorstep. I really liked the elements of incorporating social unrest, and urban strife in an MMO playfield, and I think it has made for some very unique game-play experiences.

Howard created such a vivid and exciting world in his writing we are really lucky to be able to draw on such great source material for our locations. Of course the flip side of that is that there is always somewhere else that would also have been cool to do! I don’t think we will run out of inspiration anytime soon!

GS: Classes revamp is very heavy. The Necromancer feat trees, for example, changed quite totally (nooo … you nerfed my fav spell “army of dead”!!!).  What was the idea, the intention, behind this reorganization?

Having the revamped RPG system in place meant that we had to go through all of the classes and amend their feats, abilities, combos and spells to work with the new system. I think the Necromancer has come out quite well from the changes so far though, yes, things are a little bit different, but I do think that by and large that difference is a good one!

GS: Pets mechanics have changed as well. And new kinds of pets have been implemented into the game (non-combat ones). Could you talk more in details about these aspects?

The social pets are a smaller, social focused update that the team wanted to do for players. It is easy to forget amongst all the talk of PVE and PVP game-play that MMOs are inherently social experiences and it is important to also cater in some ways for the social elements as well. I think players appreciate the opportunity to have cosmetic social pets as well!

GS: Tarantia Commons adds to gameplay a new style, with more life in the streets and upon the roofs, diseases debuffs for players, etc. Do you plan to introduce changes in gameplay also in other zones/regions?

I think whenever we add new play-fields we try and improve on what has come before, and I think we will continue to do so. As the game matures I think that experience improves and we are able to continue to improve the experience with each new area we add. We will definitely be trying to keep that going when we add the new playfields like Iron Tower and House of Crom. Each playfield has different considerations depending on the type of playfield. Tarantia Commons presented some unique challenges with it’s urban location, and I think the team have done a great job incorporating that.

GS: Will there be other major changes in crafting after Gemcutting, in the near future? And why you concentrated on this profession instead of another one, for example?

The gem system was integral to allowing the players to customise their armors, and such offers the best value to the most players. That is really why it was a primary focus to overhaul. The issues we had at launch with that system meant it was important for us to correct it and make it something meaningful for the players.

There will of course continue to be updates to the crafting system in future major updates.

GS: Will there be the risk for players to have, after the update, some inapt items, armours or weapons maybe rare, for their class ?

I think by and large the conversion has gone pretty well. Of course, depending on what items the players had before the update they may want to go and find new ones in addition, or maybe focus on a different set of stats. Overall though I think the players will like the new choices and variety offered by the new item statistics.

GS: And now? What will be the future for AoC, regarding updates? When will we see the first expansion pack on the shelves?

I am not allowed to talk about the expansion pack just yet, but we will be revealing much more about it at the conventions later in the summer, namely Gamescom in Cologne in August, and PAX in Seattle in September.

In terms of updates to the live game, the focus for the next update cycle is really in three main areas

The first focus, and the major feature addition, for the next cycle will be guild game-play. As we have mentioned before one of the major focuses for this next set of content is improving our guild functionality and the purpose and role of guilds in the game. I will explore this in more depth, and reveal a little about the direction these changes will take, in my next community letter.

In addition we will have new content as we move on to looking at the addition of new high level content for both groups and raids in the majestic halls of the House of Crom. The team is preparing some really fantastic game-play suitable for such an epic location. Continuing to add even more high level content is an important goal for us and this location plays a huge part in that. As the next major content addition you can look forward to hearing much more about this over the summer months as we prepare the challenges and encounters that await you in this most imposing and deadly of dungeons.

Then we also have the ongoing task of adding more goals and objectives to the Borderlands PVP play-fields. This is something that we are busily planning and working on already and hope to be able to add to over the course of the next update cycle.

Thx to Craig, Erling and Funcom for the interview.

,
