Alganon : Intervista esclusiva

,

You love WoW, but you’d like something different but always "classic". OK. Time to try out Alganon, a new MMO by Quest Online, that will go live on October  31. We told with them to explore better what we could find at launch.

GS: Why Alganon will be “a game for everyone”? How to mix the casual player needs with the hardcore gamer ones?

Through a mixture of world design and mechanics. Our first goal was to create a game world people want to be a part of; immersive, beautiful, warm and welcoming. Our game mechanics are fairly standard at the core, but then we offer some serious support mechanisms with the Studies. Players can also customize their character’s focal areas through defining the abilities, custom trees related to the style of play a player wishes their character to excel at. Ultimately, we have built a game people can enjoy, a game world they look forward to playing both hardcore and casually in.

GS: Families and guilds : could you talk about the difference between these two aspects in Alganon?

Guilds are organizations of players who wish to play together in a controlled group of peers where members can work together to gain achievements and recognition. Families are core assigned "groups" all players must choose at character creation, a mechanism of grouping players of like-minded play together, but the two are not related.

GS: Dual role system seems to become popular in MMOs panorama. Runes of Magic, for example and recently also Heroes of Telara announced a similar one. How your system differs from these ones ?

Those systems tend to be "Dual Class" systems, in which a character chooses two classes and attempts to merge them together into one character. This results in a armor-wearing knight who shoots fireballs, or a archer who can also raise skeletons from the grave. In those systems, the character archetype (story) and the combat role (gameplay) are blurred into one. If you want a given story, you are locked into a given gameplay. So, in order to provide players with "Dual Roles," these games are forced to give players "Dual Classes" as well.
In Alganon, we separated combat role from the class theme. The class theme of a Soldier is someone who charges into melee combat, wears heavy armor, and defends the Empire as a champion of the Imperial Army. It doesn’t matter if they want to defend their allies (tank), smash the enemy’s face (DPS), or rally the troops and lead them to victory (support). The combat role of Tank is a character that is able to survive better and keep the enemy’s attention better than other players. It doesn’t matter if they are an enlisted soldier, a mystical master of the elements, or a wandering huntsman who was raised in the wilds.
Our goal is to allow players to have a choice of multiple combat roles, even if their heart is set on a certain character archetype.
At the same time, we wanted to make grouping easy. If your group needs a tank, you shouldn’t have to spam chat channels asking everyone you see if they are a tank or not. So, we also gave each story archetype a primary role. If you need a tank, you can always ask a Soldier; every soldier is a tank. On top of that primary role, the soldier can choose a second role.

Since the primary role is always a valid role, we gave players the freedom of creating their own secondary roles by tying this second role into the Ability tree system. If you want to use one of the secondary roles we’ve created, place all of your ability points in a single tree. If you want to create your own, feel free to mix and match those abilities. In other games, players who choose a build based on their own enjoyment often find it impossible to find a group. In Alganon, you can always fall back on your primary role for grouping with hardcore players, and use your secondary role when you just want to have fun.
In short, Alganon separates the role you play in combat from the story of your character. Choose your class based on the story you want for your character. It will provide you with a primary combat role for easy grouping, but your secondary combat role is entirely up to you – use the ability tree to choose one based on how you love to play.

GS: Fog of war is a feature that seems to be in contrast with the actual “please, give me a quest helper” request of the mass-market. Could you explain this choice?

We actually allow the player to explore and map out the world as they explore, showing where they have been down to a fine grid. This allows players to quickly determine that "little place" off in the corner of a location they might have missed or overlooked. The advantage is players can build out their explored areas, and even gain certain rewards for doing so.
Without this system, players may take only a few steps into an area and believe they have seen the whole thing. We want our players to explore every corner of our massive, immersive world (which will continue to get bigger as the game grows and expands) and our mapping system will help them to do so.

GS : PvP aspects : What kind of rules will there be in the PvP servers ? Will there be also a sort of “flagged” system in the PvE ones, in certain zones?

We will not have Player vs. Player at launch. We’ve chosen to focus our attention on the PvE experience, and creating a great community of players. Once we launch, we will be looking for player input and seeing how players approach our combat system in order to create a well balanced PvP system that matches the way our players play. We want to create the system that is right for our players, not create a system and force our players to adapt to it.
However, one of the key elements of our PvP system will be the hard line between PvP and PvE. Actions will function differently in PvP than they do in PvE, and players who do not want to PvP will not be forced to. Likewise, players who do not want to PvE will not be forced to complete PvE content to be successful. Players will be able to find everything they need on their own side of the PvP/PvE divide.

GS: What are the Custom Dynamic Quests?

We have the ability to make quests available to players based on a large number of factors – previous quests completed, the abilities they’ve chosen, factions, study paths, crafting skill level, items they have come across during gameplay, and much more. Nearly any action you can perform in game, we can track and use to change which quests are available.
At launch, use of this system will be very limited, with most of our quests acting as an introduction to the game world that we want all players to have access to, regardless of their gameplay choices. After launch, we will be adding new content based on feedback from our players, and this content will better take advantage of this system. We know that a dynamic system really only limits content available to players, and so we plan to use it where it is most rewarding for our players, and not as a marketing bullet to generate hype.

GS: How our actions will modify our look in the game?

At launch, our players will have access to the core introduction content that will introduce them to the world. From there, Alganon will grow and change as our players open access to new areas, new content, and new features. These new features will have a definite effect on the appearance of players. It will be easy for low level players to identify their higher-level friends.
