Champions Online will debut in Europe September, 3. So we will be able to arrive at the cap and to create finally our nemesis …. in the meantime we have interviewed the mighty Bill Roper again …

GS: Cryptic Studios is developing two AAA MMOs together. Two different teams, but one company. Were there some ideas and features created for one of these that also influenced the other one?

A huge strength of Cryptic Studios is our core technology team. This group creates tools and tech that is shared across all projects. This process allows us to do two vital things. First, it allows the game teams to focus on creating content, tech, and tools specifically for that game. This gives each of the individual groups the ability to create specifically for that game while the bigger overall issues such as the graphics engine, performance, mission tools, etc. The second benefit is that because both games work from the same core technology, advances realized by one game team can be used in part or in whole by the other team. We have had this back and forth in a few areas already, and what we learn in Champions across numerous areas translates directly to the Star Trek Online team.

GS: Will there be in-game events where a developer’s team of superheroes will fight against players?

We actually ended our online beta with just such an event. Huge Mega-Destroid robots were invading Millennium City while developers jumped inside of Cryptonaut robots and fought against groups of players. An amazingly fun time was had by all!

GS: What are your plans for Europe in terms of servers’ number and localizations?

We have localized the game in both German and French for launch, and have had gamers on our servers playing in both those languages throughout the closed and open beta. We’re ready to handle the projected number of players, and have plans in place to rapidly expand our network should the need arise. Those are definitely the kind of problems we’d love to solve!

GS: We are in the Facebook era. Have you ever thought to integrate some Champions gadgets into a facebook player profile?

We have a strong presence on Facebook already, both in terms of a fan page, numerous developers who post, and an application. If you want to join us on Facebook, just search for Champions-Online and become a fan. You can also find out Which Champion you are from our Champions Online Facebook page. And using the built-in social media functions you can let your friends on Facebook, Twitter, Live Journal, and Rptr know what you’re up to when you’re playing from within the game!

GS: A thing that always annoyed me is to repeat the same starting area creating another character … Any plans to add in the future another newbie zone?

When you finish the tutorial (Levels 1-5) you have the choice to go to one of two crisis zones, so we definitely have the concept of options in the game early on. Soon after we launch we will allow players to skip the tutorial as long as they have gone through the tutorial once.

GS: End Game is really a word without a meaning, it’s a contradiction, in fact it represents the feature to ensure a lifetime stay into the game … many people think that it’s PvP the key to do that, others adopt high level instance and raids … but the true is that after the level cap run, first, and the perfect equipment hunt, at higher levels, generally you haven’t much to do .. What’s your thought about that?

We have what we refer to as OMEGA system content across the major areas of the game – Missions, Crafting, Nemesis, and PvP. All of these areas have specific content that can be unlocked at level 40 and are designed to keep players that want to grow their heroes after reaching the maximum current experience. And we’ll keep making more for players to do as time goes on. This ability to continue to add content after the game launches is the best thing about working on an MMO.

GS: What will happen after launch in terms of updates and expansions?

We’re going to be having our first FREE update to the game at the end of October. Called Blood Moon, this has three main areas of focus:

    * New Limited Time Event: Blood Moon – Rampaging Werewolves, Zombie Hordes including Undead Heroes and Takofanes the Undying Lord!
    * New PvP Map: Zombie Apocalypse – Players fight off zombies or get turned into zombies!
    * New Power Set: Celestial – New support power framework with the powers of redemption and vengeance!

GS: What’s your favourite mission/quest of the game?

I am a HUGE fan of the Nemesis mission chains, especially the challenge and showdown combinations. These feature the villain I have created and custom-built, story-driven areas. Making your own arch-enemy and then playing against that villain is an amazing experience.

Thx to Bill and Cryptic for the interview.

,
