,

FusionFall is the first MMO browser-game, full in 3D, that Cartoon Network has developed. With a stunning graphics and a solid gameplay, this product is waiting for hit Europe too, later this year. We told with Chris Waldron, Vice President of Gaming Operations for Cartoon Network, about that.

GS: FusionFall is now available only for USA and Canada, especially the Unlimited Access. What are your plans for Europe?

FusionFall was developed to be an international MMOG and we plan to expand our game into more countries this year. We don’t have specific dates for each country to announce at this time, but we know Cartoon Network has fans around the world.  We want to make sure that everyone gets a chance to try out FusionFall.

GS: Could you introduce to us the world and the background of the game? What Cartoon Network characters will be able to meet?

FusionFall is an MMOG that takes Cartoon Network characters, re-imagines them in an anime-inspired style and sets them in dynamic new world. However, this world is under attack by a giant, planet-devouring entity.  Players create their own in-game avatars and must battle alongside their favorite cartoon characters to save the world from this invasion.  Players team up with friends and more than 50 characters from some of Cartoon Network’s most popular shows, including Ben 10 Alien Force, Dexter’s Laboratory, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Ed, Edd’ n Eddy, The Powerpuff Girls, Kids Next Door, Samurai Jack, and many more, to restore order to the Cartoon Network universe.

GS: FF has an incredible graphics and a strong gameplay for a browser game. Which are the MMO titles influenced you during the development?

FusionFall has many of the aspects of traditional MMORPGs like a World of Warcraft, such as character advancement, world exploration, an quests, but we have also been influenced by console games such as Ratchet and Clank in adding a more action-oriented combat system and platforming elements that a younger audience is also interested in. Where most MMO worlds are relatively two-dimensional, in FusionFall players can scale the buildings, use jump pads to launch into the sky and even fire themselves out of cannons.  Developing with Unity platform and incorporating their browser engine allowed us to make the game as accessible as possible, while still providing the graphical quality you would expect from any console or full-client PC game.

GS: Has it been funny to create a MMO for kids?

Our development group has had a great time incorporating the fun and silliness of the Cartoon Network world into FusionFall. The game is all about having fun in a very bright and dynamic world populated by imaginary friends, flying monkeys and watermelon helmets.

GS: What kind of updates we must expect for the future?

We are currently planning regular content updates as well as larger expansions to the game.  The expansions would include new Cartoon Network characters and places from shows, as well as new nanos and gear, unexplored new zones and challenging new platforming areas.

GS: Could you talk about the interactions between players and the differences about this aspect (and others, if you want to specify) with the unlimited access?

When they first play the game, all players have access to more than 90 scripted chat interactions they can use with other players and also to open chat, pending their age. If they are under 18 years old, parents will need to enable and approve the child’s ability to use the free chat, in-game email and forum options. As online safety for our players is our top priority, we have partnered with Crisp Thinking and have incorporated their robust NetModerator technology to monitor open chat and email between players to prevent bad language and behavior.

GS: Will there be some surprises related to Cartoon Network and the characters that players could find and discover in the game?

Players will find that FusionFall is a great online extension to the Cartoon Network on-air world, including many in-game references to shows and even specific episodes. The locations, characters and even the quests themselves reflect show storylines that fans of the network will enjoy, all built by our team who are also huge fans themselves.

GS: What are in-game races ?

Unlike traditional MMOGs, we have many different ways for players to gain experience and advance in the game, including in-game races located in the Infected Zones. These races are on a platform course where players attempt to collect the most fusion matter in the shortest time possible. It’s just another way for players to interact with each other and advance their character, in addition to battling monsters and completing missions.

GS: Could you tell something about the character customization, the max cap, that we can reach and the kind of items that we can have in the game?

There are currently 36 levels in the game, with potential expansions coming as early as this year. When you first enter the game you create your avatar, which has millions of possible combinations to customize your clothes, face, hair, skin, etc. You will start off with very basic gear, but as you level, complete more missions and collect more Taros (in-game currency), you will get access to more gear, weapons and clothing. In the Cartoon Network Universe, nothing is off limits and our wide spectrum of gear reflects that. You can go cool hi-tech, fantasy or just hang out in normal street clothes. Some of the more popular gear items are the angel wings, Dexter’s dodgeball armor and the Black Knight gear.

GS: Could we play mini games in FF?

There are not currently mini-games in FusionFall, unless you count the races, but this may be something we add in the future.

GS: Will there be a follow up to this game for Cartoon Network? Have you plan to create another MMO in the future?

Having just launched in January, our focus is squarely on expanding FusionFall now, but we haven’t ruled out more MMOGs in the future.
