Aion : Intervista alla NCsoft

Aion could be the winning horse for NCsoft after the Tabula Rasa affair. The game is solid, has a faction system very popular here in europe and in the west in general. Korean and chinese launch have been very successful. So now it’s the turn to talk directly with NCsoft Europe to have a look to the pre-launch operation.

How is the growth of the character going to change from the Korean version?

Europe, for example elements such as voices, character face templates or quest-texts that need to be adjusted or added. We call this process ‘westernisation’.

Even if you always promised little "grind and farm", everybody still fears that; will the western version be "faster"?

Aion is by no means what some people call a ‘grinder’. The game pace is relatively high and on par with other current-generation games that have been developed here in the west. What we would like to especially emphasise is the abundance of quests and missions we have implemented, each one making sure that you always have an exciting and evolving story to follow as you take your character through the game. Normally, what defines a ‘grinder’ besides the fact that it takes ages to progress your character, is that there are very few things to do. You will find that Aion is a world filled with things to explore, discover and have fun with. We have spent a lot of time making sure that the world is living – with lush forests, immense cities and mysterious dungeons – rather than a barren field with a couple of bushes every fifty metres.

What other changes in the content of the game are we going to expect for the European version?

As I mentioned in the first question, we want to focus on tweaks and cultural adaption. The process of ‘westernisation’ means that we take a lot of time to make sure that localisation is done properly. Localisation both in character features if we think it’s needed (appearance and voices) and text (quests and lore). Sometimes quests are written in a way that assumes knowledge of Korean folklore or culture, something that would confuse many players here. This is evidently something we want to avoid, which is why we’re making sure to make not only ‘straight translations’, but re-writes that allow text to make more sense in the English language and for western culture. The development team is working hard to bring out new content and features to dive into, and this will of course be implemented even in Europe.

Aren’t you afraid the delay in the release of your product this year could work as an advantage for your competitors’ new games? Is this decision due to the development of the game or is there a commercial reason behind it as well?

The release of Aion in the western markets is on track, and we are currently working to finish localization, set up server structure, processes, integrate systems and are also performing internal tests to make sure that our westernisation is as good as it can be. Friends & Family events recently begun and will eventually expand to include more and more people for giving the game a whirl.

You have built an active fan-base, at least in Italy, compared to the competition. Do you have a secret? Are you thinking of actively using these fan-sites for your marketing campaign?

We actually have two secrets; the first one is ‘dedication’. We started working with our many communities out there before any marketing initiatives were made. Our obvious goal was to truly connect with the fans and get a feel for their impression of the game. The ones who have been with us all this time are incredibly important and we are working hard to make sure that our cooperation is intimate and informative rather than overly formal. We make sure to keep our ears sharp and take in feedback and to always be aware of what makes them happy and excited.  The second secret in our work with building up fan-driven communities is ‘honesty’. Honesty fosters trust, and trust is essential in any successful relationship.

We understand, from your previous declarations, that you have a clear strategy for the pre- and post-release of your product. Could you anticipate something about these Preview Events? How do they differ from a Beta version?

What most players want to get out from any open beta is playtime. This may not be true for each one, but for the majority out there the number one most important thing is to try the game before deciding to buy it. That’s what we want to provide our players with. We will not be demanding that participants play solely to locate bugs or translation errors (even if that is welcome), but rather to get some proper hands-on experience. We are very confident about Aion and know that it’s a brilliant game, which is why we hope that this approach will open up the eyes of many future players

The launch in Korea has been great, and it doesn’t look like there is any direct competition in the new releases, until the release of Tera.

Aion has harnessed great success in Korea and we couldn’t be happier about this. It ensures that we have solid and reliable development support to help us release the game here in Europe. As you may know, we are looking at implementing most of the polish and patching that has been implemented in Korea into our own version for release. This ensures a much higher instant quality for our players as many infancy problems that are common in MMO games will have been dealt with already.

Do you think it is going to be the same in the West? If not, which game do you think you would have to compete most with your new game?

Preparations are on-going for a big launch here in the west. We are confident about letting our consumers judge Aion and make their own opinion, since we are very confident in the game ourselves. Players will be astonished by the world’s uniqueness and depth without being over-burdened by radical changes from what they are used to and enjoy. We are very excited and eager to find out how the future unfolds

Is the Economic crisis influencing the adaptation process for European market, in terms of delays or lack of money funds ?

It would be very ignorant to act in complete disregard to the international market situation, but NCsoft has prepared for a major launch of Aion for a long time. All our funding has of course been secured since long to ensure that Aion gets the large launch it deserves

What’s the state of the game (about the European release) right now ?

We have recently launched internal Friends & Family tests where we get more intimate with the game and try to pinpoint the things we need to polish before release. Since the game has been tested out very carefully already, we know that we’ll be able to bring a solid product to the market, but we want to be sure that everything is as it should be. Quality is something we never compromise.

A lot of work is still being done in the localisation department, with server-structures and other service preparations, but each day surely brings us much closer to the impending release!

Thx to NCsoft for the interview.

Vedi qualche concorrente diretto in arrivo?
