Intervista: Warrior Epic

During these days Warrior Epic will close the beta phase to be released. The new hack ‘n’ slash MMO by True Games and GOA has many interesting aspects to discuss, so we met  Delphine Leturque, product manager, and Bjorn Loesing, lead community manager, to have some answers about that.

GS: Could you introduce the game’s background ?

A long time ago, cupidity and greed of rulers of ancient nations led to a war that ended the tranquillity and wealth of those lands. In this world of chaos and after 300 years of combats, some of the Lords gathered and secretly built a kingdom to protect and save the relics of the past: the kingdom of Providence. Providian Lords have rebuilt what was once lost and put their courage and talent to protect Providence against the dark forces that have also survived to the War and that gathered in the shadow… The Hall Lords, our players, have to defend the realm’s prosperity and peace!

GS: Could you talk about the “spirit system” more in details?

Spirits are a unique feature of Warrior Epic, where a death of a warrior is the beginning of a new aspect in strategy and gameplay. When a warrior dies, it turns into Spirit form and resides in the Sanctuary of your Hall.  The Spirit can then be summoned by your living Warriors on subsequent adventures where it will unleash devastating attacks on your enemies; or the Spirit can be bound to your equipment to imbue the item with special powers.  The level and class of your Warrior when they died affect the Spirit’s capabilities.  Spirits can also be resurrected back into living form.
In addition to Warrior Spirits garnered from a player’s own Warriors, there will also be Monster Spirits that can be found in-game.  These Monster Spirits are useful for upgrading your equipment without sacrificing a Warrior.

GS: Races and classes: what we can expect from these aspects ? Will there be something different from all the other fantasy MMOs ? How our PG will evolve ?

At launch, there will be 6 different classes of Characters and, of course, each one will have its own skills and liabilities.
The first one you discover is the Pit Fighter: he’s a melee warrior, he is expert in hand-to-hand combat which allows for skills in AOE melee strikes. Anyway, when danger begins to be too important, his instinct calls him to escape…!
The second one is the Illusionist: her power is mostly mental and she can inflict important damages to the weak minds. She can steal her enemy’s soul so don’t trust her sweet face…
The third one is the Pangolan: he is the nature’s guardian. He has good skills in healing and he’s the main summoner of pets in the game.
The fourth one is the Dungeon Archer: he’s the best at short ranged attacks. With his shield on his bow, his knife on his leg and arrows, he can inflict strong damages of all types. Despite some of his weaknesses, he can be good at many types of combat.
The fifth one is the Devotress: she’s a master at inflicting damages at one single target, she’s a discipline fighter and seeks at protecting civilians from harm.
The last one is the Assassin: she’s a nomad with a wide range of weapons. She’s well-known for her tenacity and for setting traps and bombs during combat.

GS: F2p games are living a great moment, with quality products as Runes of Magic and Atlantica Online. What will be the gameplay features that will distinguish WE , to be competitive with these big titles?

First, each player will have the chance to train and equip different warriors and not only one, as it is the case in many other titles. To build a real army and to manage it in his Warrior Hall will help him build his strategy and use the best character and thus the best skills for each mission! And even if his choice is not the best one and he happens to die, death does not mean the end: the spirit system will enable him to use his dead warriors as a new kind of “weapon” during combats…This is a great advantage and difference between Warrior Epic and other titles!
Finally, a third important point is that Warrior Epic is a short session game. Each mission will last around 20-30 minutes: players won’t have to commit and spend hours on each session to enjoy the game and make their characters progress!

GS: What about the game’s environments? What kind of setting the game will have?

At launch, there will be 3 main environments:
The Welkin Warrens, a mountain environment where a long time ago, sages, saints and scholars have hidden artefacts with great power and wisdom to prevent the forces of Chaos to use them and destroy Providence.
Faustus Estate, an important building surrounded by huge trees and walls to protect its intimacy, and originally built by a weird architect…without any help. Since his death, the domain keeps on growing alone magically…
Aberas, an island formerly in prosperity and luxury but now covered by a frightening jungle and run by greedy Gods to dominate its magic and secrets…

GS: Crafting is an important part of every MMOs. Will there be some particular feature about that?

Crafting is an essential part of Warrior Epic, although we’re taking the whole crafting process and give it a very unique spin. While the basic equipment can be acquired only through mission rewards, a basic piece of equipment is not very powerful in itself. This is where our take-on on crafting comes into play.
Warrior Epic puts a lot of emphasis into being able to individualize your characters’ skills and abilities and refining and upgrading the equipment is going into exactly the same direction. For example, a particular off-hand dagger usable by the Devotress-class may have three different attributes: Lightning Area Damage: 1, Chance to invoke Lightning Area Damage: 5% per hit, Defense Skill: +1.
While you won’t be able to change the individual attributes (if you’d rather have an off-hand dagger that deals fire damage, deals additional damage to flying units and increases the duration of your buffs, you’ll have to find it), you will be able to “craft” the spirits of your fallen warriors and of slain monsters into your items to upgrade them – in the above example, you could increase the chance to invoke the Lightning Area Damage to 10% per hit if you use a spirit powerful enough – and your character is of appropriate level to use the weapon’s upgraded abilities.
So while you will not be able to craft items from the scratch, it is entirely your choice on what statistics the weapon will have – it will require a very long time to upgrade all the statistics of all the equipment pieces you find, so you will make a choice determined by the items you have found so far, the amount of spirits you possess and your personal playing style.
We find that by allowing the players to upgrade their equipment as they wish, we capture the true spirit of Crafting in a game without forcing players to spend hours on the forge or cutting down trees, instead focussing on the action and using the newly upgraded equipment right away.

GS: How will be the guilds system?

At the moment, the guilds system is still under development. We have however received a lot of feedback from our players which we aim to incorporate to provide as much useful functionality to our playerbase as we can fit in. Stay tuned, we likely have more information about guilds very soon!

GS: Mounts and housing : what WE will offer to players?

First of all, the bad news: Warrior Epic will not have any mounts in a foreseeable future. While mounts look cool, they’re just not necessary, as the players are transported instantly into the action and won’t have to cover long distances of area to get to the quest they want to play. Instead, the leader of a group chooses the adventure, and the group is transported to the start of the dungeon / lost temple / haunted graveyard or wherever you need to be!
Also, there’s tons of other equipment and effects to make players look cool, so you’re not missing out on that aspect either.
Housing on the other hand plays a central part in Warrior Epic. Each player acts as the manager of a so called “Warrior Hall”, a function in which he hires mercenaries and adventurers to send out on missions. Each Hall has several rooms with various functions. The most important room is the Lobby, in which the host of a game invites the characters of other players to join him. This is also the room where the player can make the most adjustments – don’t like the wooden pillars? Buy a gothic-looking one and hang an ankh-shaped lamp from it. Don’t like the wooden walls? How about ivory-coloured marble with gold-inlays? Don’t like the sight from your tower? Let’s relocate to a more sunny area!
Other rooms in the Hall are used as resting or study places for your characters while they are off duty, and some (like an arena) even provide a bonus to the abilities of anyone emerging from your Hall on a mission and can be temporarily upgraded.
So, there is definitely a very strong housing-aspect in Warrior Epic. You’ll never have to sleep outside in the cold.

GS: About quests: there will be different kinds of them? Could we avoid “farming and grinding” to level up?

That one really is a trick question, isn’t it? If by “farming and grinding” you mean to go to the same spot and kill the same five monsters over and over again, we can guarantee that is not going to be the case – all the missions are scripted adventures, and experience and loot will only be rewarded on completing a mission. However, if you are looking for a particular piece of equipment that only drops in a specific quest (on the selection screen, you will be informed if a particularly rare piece of equipment for a specific class has a chance to drop in a mission or not), you will possibly have to complete that quest a few times until you receive your desired prize.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, as the maps are not static, and every time you play a mission you have played before, you will encounter different enemies, a different map-layout and many missions even sport optional subquests which may or may not be accessible every time you play the mission. So even if you’ve been to an adventure before, there is a good chance that new surprises await you upon revisiting it.
Missions themselves come with a large variety of actual tasks and stories – while most quests center around finding and defeating a particular enemy or clearing an area of monsters, you will also find quests that require small puzzles and careful interaction with NPCs to progress and navigate to a successful end. Also, some bossfights require special tactics to prevail, otherwise it certainly spells the death for your group – although as we say in Warrior Epic, “Death is only the Beginning”!

GS: PvP will be implemented at launch?

No, PvP won’t be available at launch but it will be implemented within the next few weeks after release.

Thx to Dephine Leturque e Bjorn Loesing for the interview.

,

Quale tipo avrà WE?

Ci sarà qualche particolare opzione in WE?

GS: Cavalcature e case : cosa offre WE ai giocatori?
